The rating comes from a laboratory test: steel balls of increasing size are dropped on the shingle from heights that mimic hail, and the shingle is bent to look for cracks in the mat afterward. Class 4 is the top grade, the two-inch ball. Manufacturers reach it two ways, either with a thicker, more flexible asphalt and a reinforced mat, or by adding a polymer to the asphalt so it absorbs the blow like a tire rather than cracking like a tile. Both work; the polymer-modified shingles tend to hold their granules better after a strike, which matters because granule loss is how hail kills a roof slowly.
On an Austin house the rating does two practical things. It turns most inch-and-a-quarter hail, the common size, into a non-event rather than a claim and a deductible. And many carriers writing Texas homeowners policies discount the wind-and-hail portion of the premium for a Class 4 roof, sometimes substantially, on receipt of the manufacturer's certificate and the invoice. A few carriers pair that discount with a cosmetic-damage exclusion, so ask your agent for both halves before choosing.
Color is the other Austin question. A roof deck in July runs well over 150 degrees under a dark shingle. Lighter and reflective-granule shingles, the ones rated for cool roofs, run cooler and keep the attic cooler; they also show algae streaking sooner in our humidity, which the algae-resistant grades address. The roofer brings sample boards, and the written sheet names the exact product line, color and rating so the certificate your insurer wants matches what went on the roof. In the City's Wildland-Urban Interface zones, the shingle over the correct underlayment forms the Class A assembly the code requires.
How the job is done
UL 2218 Class 4 shingles
Architectural shingles that passed the two-inch steel-ball test, chosen from lines whose rating certificate your insurer will accept.
Full system from one maker
Underlayment, starter, hip-and-ridge and shingles from the same manufacturer, which is what unlocks the longest material warranty.
Cool and algae-resistant options
Reflective-granule colors for lower attic temperatures and copper-granule algae resistance for the north slopes that streak.
Nailing to spec
Four or six nails per shingle at the manufacturer's line, which is what keeps the wind warranty valid on the first spring gust.
Ventilation checked
Ridge and intake balanced to the attic volume so the shingles are not baked from below; a Class 4 roof that cooks still fails early.
Certificate for your insurer
The product's rating certificate and the invoice sent to you for the discount, with the finished-roof photographs.

Questions about class 4 shingle roofs
Is a Class 4 shingle hail-proof?
No. It resists the common sizes and takes far less damage from the large ones, but three-inch hail like West Lake Hills saw in 2023 will still mark it. Think of it as the difference between a bruised roof and a destroyed one.
How much is the insurance discount?
It varies by carrier and policy, and a few carriers have trimmed it; many Texas homeowners still see a meaningful reduction in the wind-and-hail premium. Get the figure from your agent before the roof goes on, in writing, and ask whether a cosmetic exclusion comes with it.
Do Class 4 shingles look different?
No. The same architectural profiles and colors are made in Class 4 versions; from the street nobody can tell.
Will a light color really keep the house cooler?
The attic, yes, measurably, which helps the air conditioner. Whether that shows on the bill depends on how well the attic is insulated and sealed; the roofer will give you an honest view for your house rather than a brochure number.
Can I just replace the hail-damaged slopes with Class 4?
You can, outside the WUI zones, and the roofer will say whether the remaining slopes have enough life to justify it. Inside the zones, half or more of the roof means a full replacement under Austin's code.
